Too often, music for children's shows can be patronising or worse, scored on MIDI and then played from CD but here, not only were the tunes interesting and varied, they were executed with precision and great talent. As musicians ourselves, Laura and I were drawn to how seamlessly the drummer moved from complex jazz polyrhythms on the kit to avant garde pieces on the vibes (so nice to hear the real thing). The guitarist, dead-pan all the way delivered great chops that Wes Montgomery would've been proud off. The saxes played freely and expressively and the vocal score was laced with interesting harmonies, all pitched note perfect..
All in all, the musical calibre shown on stage was way above anything else we've seen at a gig for years, and this was a kids show. Phenomenal..!!
